Starting this fall, a course on American penmanship taught by Masayo Kashiwagi will begin.

Spencerian is a handwritten typeface that was developed in the United States around 1840-1850 and is known for its beauty, readability, and speed.

At the time, the American economy was booming, and before the advent of typewriters, speedy and accurate handwriting was an essential skill in offices.
Among these, Spencerian developed into a more practical "business writing" and became widely used.

The traditional style of writing smoothly with the forearm is both efficient and elegant, and continues to have a major influence on modern calligraphy culture.

In this course, you will have fun learning sophisticated writing styles while learning about this history and background. In the first year, you will start with monoline business writing, and in the second year, you will progress to Spencerian and ornamental writing. (Second-year enrollment is available only to those who wish to take the course.)
