This course teaches American Penmanship by Masayo Kashiwagi.
"Spencerian" is a handwritten script that originated in America around 1840-1850, combining beauty, legibility, and speed.
During that time, the American economy was rapidly growing, and before typewriters became common, speedy and accurate handwriting was an indispensable skill in offices.
Within this context, Spencerian evolved into a more practical "Business Writing" and became widely used.
The traditional style of writing smoothly using the forearm is both efficient and elegant, and continues to have a significant impact on modern calligraphy culture.
In this course, while touching upon this history and background, students will enjoy learning a refined writing style. The first year starts with monoline business writing, and the second year progresses to Spencerian and Ornamental script (enrollment in the second year is optional).
